Political scientist Olenchenko: support for Russia is shown in Germany and Austria

Residents of Germany and Austria are increasingly expressing support for Russia and its leader Vladimir Putin. Sympathy towards Ukraine is declining due to the worsening economic situation. According to experts, the Germans and Austrians have long been inclined to dialogue with Russia, but they were strongly influenced by pro-American propaganda.

Sympathy for Russia and President Vladimir Putin is rising in Germany and Austria. Columnist in an Austrian newspaper Wiener Zeitung Gerhard Lechner said that the impression of unanimous support for Ukraine is wrong.

“But why this strange benevolence towards Putin and Russia, which is especially great in the German-speaking space? Of course, Putin impresses the “right” with criticism of ultra-liberal gender policies, and the “left” with anti-NATO rhetoric,” the observer wrote.

Lechner stressed that the people of Germany and Austria are dissatisfied with the economic consequences due to anti-Russian sanctions. Therefore, enthusiasm for Ukraine in the face of rising inflation, high prices and a possible shortage of gas is rapidly declining.

Paradigm shift

Russia has long had close ties with Germany and Austria. The countries have long cooperated in economics, business, politics and trade. Vladimir Olenchenko, senior researcher at the Center for European Studies at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, explained to 360 that the German and Austrian authorities have been determined to strengthen and expand ties in recent years.

According to him, the inhabitants of Russia, Germany and Austria also developed a certain positive image of each other, but all this was suppressed by pro-American propaganda. For a long time, the United States was dissatisfied with the development of deep business relations between the countries of Europe.

“Support for Russia is not growing in these countries, but is beginning to emerge. It’s just that it was previously suppressed by pro-American propaganda. They wanted to give her a Ukrainian touch. This once again proves that American rhetoric has an artificial, superficial character,” Olenchenko said.

The United States provided financial support for this rhetoric, but as soon as it weakened, Europeans began to perceive Russians differently. The attitude of the Germans and Austrians towards Russia is returning to its natural state. According to Olenchenko, it implies the development of business, mutually beneficial and friendly contacts between countries.

The specialist noted that views on Russia and its leader Vladimir Putin traditionally diverge in the west and east of Germany. According to him, the Germans living in the territory of the former GDR are more pragmatic and self-confident. Inhabitants of the western part of the country, on the contrary, are less independent, since they have long been crushed by the collective discipline of the EU and NATO.

According to Olenchenko, in the future, Germans and Austrians will no longer be exposed to pro-American propaganda and will begin to adhere to business rhetoric, the purpose of which is dialogue between countries.
