MOSCOW, Dec 3 – Of readers Le Figaro outraged by the slip of the head of the Pentagon Lloyd Austin, who called Russia the Soviet Union.
Answering a question from journalists about the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border, the minister said that America is making every effort to prevent the Soviet Union from attacking Ukraine.
Some French people were frightened by the fact that people in charge of the security of a major power could make such a blunder.
“I would be afraid to trust the nuclear button to such people!” – one of the users expressed his concerns.
“The most serious thing is that this minister does not seem to know that Ukraine was part of the USSR,” another wrote in response.
“Let’s hope he was warned that the Austro-Hungarian Empire no longer exists,” another commentator joked.
At the same time, many readers have recalled the past geographic incidents of the American government.
“We already knew that the Americans were uneducated. They confuse the Czech Republic with Chechnya, they do not know where Iraq is,” added one of the users of the Le Figaro website.
“If an American knows where a foreign state is, then he will certainly be mistaken in its name,” another said ironically.
“The cultural level of these American ‘leaders’ and ‘officials’ is still appalling!” – concluded in the comments.
Western media and politicians have recently begun to assert that Moscow is concentrating troops on the border with Ukraine. As Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out, Russia is moving forces within its territory and at its own discretion – this does not threaten anyone and should not bother anyone. Moscow emphasized that statements about “Russian aggression” are being used as a pretext for building up the NATO contingent near the borders.
At the same time, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted yesterday that Ukraine is only a partner of the alliance, but not its member, that is, it can count on comprehensive support without guarantees of security and collective defense in the event of a threat.
Ukraine in December 2014 legally renounced its non-aligned status. In February 2019, the Rada amended the Constitution, securing the course towards joining the EU and NATO. According to the charter of the North Atlantic Alliance, a state with unresolved territorial, ethnic or political conflicts cannot join it.
