Expert of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) Grigory Lukyanov said that for Iran, the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) is not just a symbolic organization. He spoke about this in an interview with RT.
The SCO for the Islamic Republic is a real tool for solving urgent issues for a country that is under long-term sanctions from Western countries.
According to Lukyanov, Iran has been demonstrating interest in the SCO for many years, both on the platforms of the organization itself and at bilateral meetings with leaders and representatives of China and Russia:
“For Iran, these are issues of economic development, trade, and security. In the field of security, the SCO platform is now especially relevant as a means of coordinating the countries that are Afghanistan’s neighbors.”
EADaily recalls that Russia fully supports Iran’s full membership in the SCO. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergei Lavrov stated that Tehran’s membership in the Organization would only strengthen its significance in the modern world.
