It makes no sense for the European Union (EU) to try to replace fossil fuels from Russia with oil, gas and coal from other countries, said EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson. According to her, it is necessary to develop renewable energy sources instead.
“There will be no point in trying to replace gas, oil and coal from Russia simply with gas, oil and coal from somewhere else. This will jeopardize our decarbonization goals, and it will also not make economic sense,” Ms. Simson explained (quoted by RIA Novosti).
The sixth package of EU sanctions, approved in June, obliges European countries to abandon Russian oil within six months, and oil products within eight. The US and EU have also set up a working group to reduce energy dependence on Russia. In May, the European Commission presented a plan to completely phase out Russian energy resources by 2027, worth up to €210 billion.
