MOSCOW, Dec 2 – Many people know about the benefits of fish oil from early childhood. Whether this product can help in the prevention of infectious diseases, therapist Georgy Sapego said in an interview with radio Sputnik.
The health benefits of fish oil are primarily due to the fact that it contains omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, the doctor said. In particular, thanks to these substances, the product has an anti-inflammatory effect.
“Fish oil lowers the level of triglycerides, literally fat, in the blood, slightly lowers blood pressure, slightly reduces heart rate, reduces blood clotting. Omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids from fish oil also have anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, fish oil, for example, is recommended for people with rheumatoid arthritis, “explained Sapego.
According to the doctor, fish oil cannot be considered a remedy that significantly strengthens the immune system. But its anti-inflammatory effect may play a role in infectious diseases as well.
“I don’t think that fish oil significantly increases our resistance to infections, but it slightly inhibits inflammation in the lungs,” Sapego said.
The fish oil we eat is usually obtained from the carcasses of the inhabitants of cold seas, he continued.
“This is the oil from fish that live in cold seas. The fish oil that used to be given to children from a spoon was obtained from the liver of fatty fish. Now fish oil is made from the whole carcass of fish. This fish is processed in a clever way, dissolved and the resulting oil is secreted. Such fat contains a lot of unsaturated fatty acids, “the doctor said.
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are found not only in fish oil. They are found in spinach, walnuts, beans, linseed and mustard oil, Sapego added.
Another source of these essential substances for humans is biologically active food additives. However, they should not be abused, the doctor said.
“The only problem is that the composition of supplements is unpredictable. The toxins in dietary supplements cannot be controlled. To protect yourself, you should not eat more than four grams of Omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids per day, then you cannot poison yourself with toxins,” Sapego said.
