The doctor told how to recognize oxygen starvation

The onset of oxygen starvation (hypoxia) may be indicated by various signs, such as weakness, fatigue, chronic fatigue syndrome, headaches, dizziness. Such a condition is dangerous for the body, primarily for the nervous tissue, said in an interview. Radio Sputnik Doctor of Medical Sciences, Chief Freelance Specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region in General Medical Practice Roman Gorenkov.

According to the expert, hypoxia can occur for various reasons. It can be associated with lung damage, such as with COVID-19, with cardiovascular disease, with low physical activity, long stays indoors, with the release of toxic gases into the atmosphere. In addition, oxygen starvation can occur due to anemia and low atmospheric pressure.

Due to the lack of oxygen, the nervous tissue is primarily affected, so weakness, drowsiness and hypotension occur during hypoxia. In addition, hypoxia can contribute to increased fatigue, the onset of chronic fatigue syndrome, causes headaches, dizziness and pallor of the skin.

“You can check for the presence of hypoxia by the level of saturation (blood oxygen saturation – ed.) using a pulse oximeter. An oxygen content above 95 percent is normal, everything below is pathology, ”Gorenkov explained, adding that hypoxia can also be hidden when it cannot be detected.

You can prevent the onset of oxygen starvation by ventilating the premises, leading an active lifestyle, as well as physical activity. If hypoxia is associated with a chronic disease, then oxygen therapy (oxygen treatment) will help in this case, the interlocutor concluded.
