The central government has told the Supreme Court that girls will not only be included in the National Defense Academy but also in the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) and five Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) in the country. The RIMC and RMS, like the NDA, have been institutions where only boys have been inducted and act as feeder institutions for the armed forces.

Submitting its affidavit on Wednesday, the Center conveyed its decision to include girls in RIMC and RMS from the academic session 2022-23 after bringing necessary structural and logistical changes. For RIMC in Dehradun, the affidavit states that people in the age group of 11.5 to 13 join the institute after clearing the All India Competitive Examination.

The government said that it will start inducting 5 girls every six months from January 2023, for which girls will be allowed to take the entrance exam in June 2022. Describing the first phase of its scheme, the central government said that it will be increased by 20 percent every year. This increase will also impact some infrastructure.

In its affidavit, the government said that in the second phase, the capacity of RIMC will be increased to a total of 350, which will include 100 girls. Girls will be allowed to appear in the entrance test scheduled in June 2027 for admission to RIMC for a tenure commencing from January 2028 in June … Additional staff will be required.

The government further said that apart from appropriate medical standards and training courses for girl cadets, several other amendments and restructurings would have to be made in the system to provide privacy, security. The affidavit said that a board of officers is examining all relevant issues so that the girl-friendly infrastructure can be changed.

Let us tell you that a bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MM Sundaresh will examine the government’s affidavit on Thursday.
