The Academy of Sciences of Moldova (AMS) supported the proposal of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) to rename the Moldovan language into Romanian in state documents. The AMN added that their position remains unchanged. The statement was published on their site.
“The return to the legislative norm of the correct name of our language would put an end to the endless unnecessary discussions that are going on on this issue, all the speculation that has been going on for several decades, would improve the image of our republic throughout the world and would ensure its process of European integration,”— said in a statement from the AMN.
In 2013, the Constitutional Court ruled that Romanian is the state language in the country. At the same time, according to the constitution of Moldova, the state language in the country is Moldovan based on the Latin alphabet, this variant is similar to Romanian. Romanian is taught in Moldovan schools and universities, while Cyrillic-based Moldovan is taught only in unrecognized Transnistria.
The day before, PAS registered in Parliament an initiative to change Moldovan, enshrined in the country’s constitution, into Romanian. To revise the constitution, the initiative must be supported by 67 deputies, PAS has 63 mandates in parliament.
