Facebook (owned by Meta Corporation, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned), Twitter, Google and several other companies have appealed to the US Supreme Court. Companies want to ask judges to suspend a Texas law that makes it illegal to block users for their political views. This was reported by Reuters.
The tech giants have asked the Supreme Court to uphold a lower court’s decision to suspend the law while the appeal process continues.
In September 2021, Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott signed a law that banned social networks from blocking users for their political views if the platform has more than 50 million users. The law also obliges social networks to report on how they moderate content.
The law went into effect on May 11 after the Texas Circuit Court of Appeals granted a motion on behalf of the state to suspend the blocking of the law.
