The ex-president of Moldova was summoned to court for protesting against the LGBT* march

CHISINAU, 26 Feb – The ex-president of Moldova, leader of the Party of Communists (PCRM) Vladimir Voronin and six other opposition deputies were summoned to court for organizing a flash mob against the LGBT* march in Chisinau in 2022, the publication reports Agora.
In the summer of 2022, the organization Genderdoc-M filed a lawsuit against Moldovan opposition deputies due to the fact that during a protest they hung posters on the windows of parliament with the inscriptions: “No to homosexual dictatorship”, “Moldova is against pride”, “No discrimination against traditional values” , “Moldova is not Sodom.”
“The court hearings on this claim were postponed, and then the court found that the claim was filed with procedural violations. However, the Chisinau Appeals Chamber ruled that the court of first instance should return to the consideration of the case. As a result, the leader of the PCRM Voronin, other communist deputies, representatives of the banned party “Shor” Marina Tauber, Diana Karaman, Valery Muduk, Vyacheslav Nigay, Inga Sibova and Nikolay Rusol were summoned to court for discrimination based on sexual orientation,” writes Agora, citing a statement from Genderdoc-M.
The Orthodox Church of Moldova is asking the authorities to ban festivals and marches of the LGBT* community from 2022. The Church notes that every time during marches and festivals, clashes occur between supporters and opponents of these actions, which end only after the intervention of the police.
In Moldova, the opposition has been holding anti-government protests for almost two years, insisting on the resignation of the Cabinet and President Maia Sandu, who is the informal leader of the ruling Action and Solidarity party. The demonstrators accuse the country’s authorities of failing to cope with the crisis in the economy and energy sector, as well as putting pressure on the opposition.
* The movement is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia.
