TASS: leaders of Azov who surrendered in Mariupol were transferred to Russia

Officers of various Ukrainian units, including the leadership of the nationalist Azov regiment, were transferred to Russia from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). About it TASS said a source in power structures. Deputy commander of Azov Svyatoslav Palamar (call sign Kalina) and commander of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Sergey Volynsky (call sign Volyn) were sent to the Russian Federation to conduct investigative actions, who surrendered in Mariupol.

The Azov Regiment was formed in 2014 in Mariupol. Initially, it acted as a battalion of the special purpose militia patrol service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, then transferred to the National Guard.

“Special forces officers took Svyatoslav Palamar and Sergey Volynsky from the DPR to the territory of the Russian Federation to conduct investigative actions with them. Other officers of various Ukrainian units were also transferred to Russia,” the source said. He did not specify to which Russian region and the commanders of which Ukrainian units were transferred.

Palamar before the war in Donbass took part not only in the battles on the Maidan, but also in the so-called Orange Revolution, which took place in Ukraine from November 2004 to January 2005. Volynsky, among other things, is known for public statements along with other members of the nationalist battalion. In particular, he asked a number of world leaders to organize the evacuation from the territory of Azovstal.

On May 17, fighters of the Azov regiment began to leave the territory of the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. They were taken to the territory controlled by the DPR. DPR Foreign Minister Natalia Nikonorova told Kommersant that those who surrendered would be judged by an international tribunal involving the republics of Donbass and Russia.
