Taiwan to hold military drills in response to Chinese drills


    China’s hostile actions towards Taiwan defy peace and the international order. This is stated in statementreleased by the Taiwan Foreign Ministry on Thursday. In response to Beijing’s actions, Taipei intends to hold military exercises with live firing.

    “Regarding China’s deliberate intensification of various forms of military action against Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) emphasizes that China’s provocative actions challenge the international order and disrupt regional peace and stability,” Taiwan’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

    In anticipation of military exercises, Taipei urged the aircraft and sea vessels of other countries not to enter the designated airspace and water areas.

    The Taiwan Foreign Ministry said that the island is an independent, sovereign country and does not intend to submit to China. “The Taiwanese government will be even more resolute in protecting the island’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the ministry said, adding that it will continue to maintain close communication and coordination with the United States and other allied countries.

    Taiwan declared secession from China in 1949 during the civil war, but Beijing still considers it a province. The administrative status of the region has not been settled.

    On August 4, the PRC began military exercises with live firing, they are planned to be held in six water areas around Taiwan. The exercises were announced on August 2, the day US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan. Beijing warned that such actions by Taipei and Washington would have consequences.
