The Constitutional Court of Latvia has decided: private universities have the right to offer study programs in the languages of the EU countries, but not in Russian, the press service of the Constitutional Court reported today, February 10.

The explanatory note states:

“Latvia is part of the European cultural space, the Russian language is outside of it.”

Back in 2020, the Constitutional Court decided that the Saeima had not violated the Basic Law when, in order to protect the Latvian language, it restricted the use of other languages in the educational process. Then the parliament decided that higher education in Latvia takes place in the state language and only in special cases is it allowed to study in other official languages of the European Union, but not in Russian.

As previously reported EADaily , On February 9, the Latvian National Electronic Media Council restricted access to a number of sites related to the Russian press. The decision was made in accordance with the EU Council Regulation on restrictive measures in connection with the actions of Russia.
