The US Department of Defense did not attach much importance to the incident last Tuesday, during which a Russian fighter jet intercepted two American bombers over the Baltic Sea. The Pentagon found “nothing significant” in what happened, reports the Associated Press today, May 24.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said the day before that the military had detected two air targets approaching the country’s border and sent a Su-27 multirole fighter to intercept. The agency identified the aircraft as two US Air Force B-1B strategic bombers.
Pentagon Press Secretary Gen. Pat Ryder later confirmed the incident in an interview with reporters.
“As far as I understand, it was a safe and professional interaction with the Russian aircraft. Therefore, I can’t say anything significant about this, ” – said the representative of the American military department.
There were no violations of the state border. According to the National Center for Defense Control of the Russian Federation, the Su-27 was flying in accordance with international rules for the use of airspace.
