The South African authorities have promised to grant diplomatic immunity to all participants in the meeting of BRICS foreign ministers, which will be held in June, and the August summit of heads of state. This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic, the statement was published in social networks.
“This is a standard grant of immunity that we do for all international conferences and summits held in South Africa, regardless of the level at which the events take place,” the agency explained.
In this way, the participants of the meeting will be protected from the “jurisdiction of the host” during the event. At the same time, it is specified that diplomatic immunity will not take precedence over an international court order issued to any of the participants in the meetings. In addition, immunities are granted “to conferences, not to individuals,” the statement said.
The meeting of the BRICS foreign ministers will be held in Cape Town on June 1 and 2, the summit of the heads of state in South Africa was scheduled for August 22-24.
