Six cases of deltacron infection detected in Russia

In Russia, six cases of the disease with a new type of COVID-19 – “deltacron” were detected. It is a hybrid of the delta and omicron strains. Five cases of infection were detected in St. Petersburg, one in Moscow. In total, today, August 11, 25,815 cases of coronavirus infection were detected. This is the maximum since March 25th.

“At the moment, there is no reason to believe that the hybrid variant leads to a more severe course of the disease or is more transmissible,” they said. “Interfax” in Rospotrebnadzor. It is clarified that those who fell ill with deltacron suffered a mild illness, no one needed hospitalization. Rospotrebnadzor stressed that the new coronavirus hybrid does not have a significant impact on the epidemiological situation in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The deltacron hybrid was only identified in Russia during the latest downloads of genomic data from St. Petersburg. The virus was first detected in July, but the results were considered erroneous.

The day before, the daily incidence of coronavirus in Moscow increased by almost 80%, reaching a record high since March 26 – 23,771 cases. Rospotrebnadzor does not consider it necessary to introduce restrictive measures. Herd immunity to COVID-19 dropped to 8.6% last week. In early summer, this figure reached 31%. Anatoly Altshtein, chief researcher at the Gamaleya Center, said that the peak incidence will occur in the fall of this year.
