Sheikh Hasina has put India in dire straits, Will Narendra Modi meet her?

Delhi has been in a very unprepared state ever since a Bangladesh Air Force plane carrying Sheikh Hasina landed in Delhi. The incident took more than 24 hours for the Indian government to make an official statement about the situation in Bangladesh. They thought the Indian Parliament session was going on at that time.

The Indian government’s response to the situation has been seen as slow and unprepared, with over 24 hours passing before an official statement was made despite the Indian Parliament being in session.

On Monday night, the affairs committee, under the chairmanship of Narendra Modi, held a special meeting to discuss Bangladesh. The next day, the Indian foreign minister met with the representatives of all political parties.

Then on Tuesday afternoon, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar made a formal speech about Bangladesh in the Parliament of India.

The BBC has come to know that Narendra Modi will meet with him publicly during his stay in Delhi, but no decision has been taken on whether the meeting will be made public. Sheikh Hasina herself expressed interest in explaining this. More than once, Delhi told Bengal that overall, this situation has put the Indian government in extreme crisis.

Whether India should grant political asylum on a long-term basis. Different opinions are heard, like many are arguing in favor of it and some are also giving opinion against it.

Again, there is a clear disagreement among observers and analysts about what should be done by Delhi in the current situation in Bangladesh. The situation will worsen if India shows excessive activity in the kind of anti-India storm that is being seen in Bangladesh now.

Currently, another theory is that if India keeps quiet about this situation in Bangladesh, another fundamentalist force will be created. Millions of Hindus will enter India.

It is proceeding with the strategy of keeping a careful eye on the situation, but these counter-arguments have put India in a strong dilemma. Many analysts believe that a strong ambivalence in Delhi will work against Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India due to the political crisis in Bangladesh.

Since Sheikh Hasina was seen as the biggest supporter in the international arena, there were elements in the opposition movement of Hasina, but in this background, giving political shelter to Hasina will send a wrong message and will further incite India’s opposition inside Bangladesh.

Many people think that India should respect Sheikh Hasina’s wishes, keeping in mind their old history and long-standing relationship. Former Foreign Secretary Harshvardhan Shimla was saying that if he wants to stay in India for any reason, we should engage with him at the appropriate level according to his dignity and respect.

Foreign policy expert Shubhra Kamal Dutta said that he should be kept in India with respect as long as he is not guaranteed safe and secure asylum in any third country.

Many analysts believe that the next government of Bangladesh should do whatever it takes to be friendly to India.

Pressure needs to be exerted on the Bangladesh authorities,, who have the favor of the BJP‘s top leaders in West Bengal. Otherwise, at least 1 crore Hindus fled from that country to India, says Shubhra Kamal Dutta, but it started with the refugee problem. India should have directly intervened long ago in the current crisis in Bangladesh.

After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, the BJP government stopped the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh. To ensure their safety, a committee has been formed under the leadership, and curfews have been issued in the bordering states of Manipur and Meghalaya.
