Scientist Valery Mitko, who has been under house arrest since February 2020 in a criminal case of high treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code), has died. He was 81 years old.
“Our client Valery Mitko, the president of the Arctic Academy of Sciences, one of the country’s leading specialists in hydroacoustics, has died,” said the First Department human rights project, whose lawyers defended the scientist, on October 2.
“The professor was increasingly called an ambulance, sent to the hospital – from where for the last time, a few days ago, they returned on a stretcher. He was unable to walk or sit, let alone take care of his wife, a bedridden patient,” the project said in a statement.
According to the investigation, according to Interfax, in 2018, the scientist made a trip to China, during which he allegedly handed over to the country’s special services information containing state secrets. The scientist pleaded not guilty. The prosecutor’s office of St. Petersburg brought the scientist’s case to court in January 2022. In essence, the process did not have time to start.
Valery Mitko was born in 1941 in Chernihiv. As reported “RIA News”he served in the Pacific Fleet as head of the radio engineering service – commander of the combat communications unit of a surface ship and a nuclear submarine.
Mr. Mitko is a Corresponding Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Engineering, Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Vice President and Chairman of the Hydroacoustics Section of the Eastern European Association of Acoustics.
