An outbreak of hepatitis of unknown etiology in children in several European countries could be triggered by a new virus. The theory of the viral nature of hepatitis was put forward by the head of the scientific center for the prevention and control of AIDS of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor Vadim Pokrovsky.

Scientists are looking for a previously unknown virus or a new variant of a known virus. At the same time, he considers the version of the occurrence of autoimmune hepatitis unlikely, because this group of diseases is not characterized by an acute course.

The picture of the spread of the disease is specific, if we are not talking about the coincidence of several risk factors. Toxic hepatitis is possible, but it is unlikely that it developed due to a common poisonous substance in children from different cities, the scientist added.

According to WHO, in 20 countries, 228 children have already become ill with severe hepatitis, one of them has died. Scientists suggest that the infection may be related to the coronavirus.
