A Russian Su-27 fighter flew to intercept two US Air Force strategic bombers over the Baltic Sea. This was announced today, May 23, at the National Defense Control Center of the Russian Federation.
According to the agency, two air targets approaching the Russian border were detected by means of airspace control.
“In order to prevent violation of the state border of the Russian Federation, a Su-27 fighter from the air defense forces of the Baltic Fleet was taken into the air,” — reported in the department.
The crew of the fighter classified the air targets as two US Air Force B-1B strategic bombers and occupied the established duty zone.
“After the removal of foreign military aircraft from the state border, the Russian fighter returned to its base airfield,” the statement says.
There were no violations of the state border of the Russian Federation. The Russian Su-27 was flying in accordance with international rules for the use of airspace, the NCUO noted.
