Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria admits rupture of diplomatic relations due to expulsion of diplomats

Russian Ambassador to Sofia Eleonora Mitrofanova said that Moscow could break off diplomatic relations with Bulgaria in response to the expulsion of 70 diplomats. According to her, Russia will take “very drastic measures.”

“This cannot remain without consequences. Diplomatic relations may even be severed,” Ms. Mitrofanova said. Bulgarian national television.

The Ambassador informed TASSthat Russia is waiting for a response until 12:00 Friday, July 1, after which a decision on the response will be made. “If there is no answer or it will be negative, then I will raise the issue of closing the embassy before the President of the Russian Federation, which will mean a break in diplomatic relations. This is extremely undesirable and absolutely harmful to our long and very warm relations,” said Ms. Mitrofanova.

70 Russian diplomats will be expelled from Bulgaria on one flight this Sunday, accused of working for the security services. Together with their families, the number of Russians who have to urgently leave the country will exceed 200 people. The Russian Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Ruse will be closed, the work of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Varna will be suspended. In addition, Bulgaria itself will temporarily close the Consulate General in Yekaterinburg.

Russia is a priority tourism market for Bulgaria, Bulgarian Tourism Minister Stella Baltova said in 2021 in 2021.
