Russia stands for continued cooperation in space, regardless of its participation in the ISS

Sergey Krikalev, executive director of Roscosmos for manned programs, said that Russia is in favor of continuing international cooperation in space, regardless of the timing of its participation in the International Space Station (ISS) project. Russia’s participation in the ISS depends on the technical condition of the station, he added.

“How long will depend primarily on the technical aspect. We started cooperation many years ago, more than forty years ago, and we will continue it for as long as I can imagine,” said Sergei Krikalev at a briefing (quoted by RIA Novosti).

Mr. Krikalev added that cooperation in the space sphere was started as early as within the framework of the Soyuz-Apollo mission. According to him, it should continue regardless of the timing of the ISS.

Sergey Krikalev added that Russia will fly to the ISS until its own station is created. According to him, it has already begun to be developed. Mr. Krikalev did not provide details.

The life of the ISS ends in 2024. The new head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, announced Russia’s withdrawal from the ISS project after 2024, but a decision on this could be made much later. The US is going to use the station until 2030.
