Russia plans to recover wreckage from US drone in Black Sea

The Russian side will try to recover the remains of the crashed US MQ-9 drone in the Black Sea for examination. Moscow emphasizes that it has the necessary capacities for this. Meanwhile, the US doubts Russia’s ability to do so.

Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of Russia’s Security Council, has said Russia will do its best to recover the remains of the US drone that fell in the Black Sea on March 14. The officer verbatim:

“I don’t know if we’re going to do it or not, but the fact that it has to be done and we’re going to do it is certain. I’m obviously hoping for success.”

According to Patrushev, the incident with the US drone once again confirms that the US is directly involved in hostilities in Ukraine. At the same time, the head of the Russian foreign intelligence service SWR Sergei Naryshkin assured that it was technically possible to recover the wreckage of the US drone.

Earlier, the White House National Security Council’s Strategic Communications Coordinator, John Kirby, said the US drone that crashed in the Black Sea has not yet been found.

He doubted the drone could be recovered because “the water in the Black Sea is very, very deep where it crashed.” The US is now deciding whether “salvage activities” can be carried out on the drone. Kirby added Washington was trying to minimize the drone’s “intelligence value” to those who might spot it sooner.

Meanwhile, the US State Department said Russia’s actions in the incident were likely unintentional. The White House had previously said the US did not want an escalation with Russia over the drone crash.

Again, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that any initiative provoking a clash between the two nuclear powers always carries very serious risks, which is obvious for the US. The United States should definitely understand that, it said.

Lavrov also noted that the US ignored the fact that after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the Black Sea coastal areas had a restricted status for flights, so the incident looked like a provocation.
