Russia may be the first to use nuclear weapons if its existence is threatened

Russia may be the first to use nuclear weapons if aggression against Moscow threatens the very existence of the state. This was announced by Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev.

“You said that Russia would never be the first to use a nuclear weapon, but this is not entirely true,” he said during his speech at the educational marathon “Knowledge. First”, commenting on the words of one of the participants in the meeting.

Medvedev cited one of the points of the Russian nuclear doctrine, which, according to him, directly states that “nuclear weapons can be used in the event that aggression is carried out against the Russian Federation with the use of other types of weapons that threaten the very existence of the state.” This is, in fact, the use of nuclear weapons in response to such actions, the politician added.

In addition, the deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation stressed that Western countries should understand the rules and intentions of Moscow, they should not underestimate the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons in the event of a threat.
