In Moscow and St. Petersburg, cases of infection with the Deltacron variant of the coronavirus, which is a hybrid of the Delta and Omicron strains, have been detected. Information reported in the press service of Rospotrebnadzor.
“As of 08/10/22, six genomic sequences related to the indicated COVID-19 variant have been loaded into the VGARus database. The sequences are dated July and early August. Five samples for research were taken in St. Petersburg, one in Moscow, ”the Rospotrebnadzor website states.
It is reported that patients had a mild illness, without hospitalization. So far, there is no reason to believe that deltacron provokes a more severe course of the disease or is more contagious, the Rospotrebnadzor noted.
Previously, scientists have identified at least three variants of the “connection” of the Delta and Omicron strains. “Deltakron” was identified in January 2022 in Cyprus, reports RT. Rospotrebnadzor assumed that it was created in the laboratory. Russian virologist, professor at the Gamaleya Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology Anatoly Altshtein, said that the new variant does not yet pose a great danger, writes “reedus“.
