Thousands of Ukrainian refugees who arrived in Spain never received financial assistance. We are talking about the support that they were promised back in June last year by the central government of the kingdom. This is reported by the newspaper El Pais.
How informs edition, each refugee “with limited resources” was to receive monthly 400 euros per family, as well as 100 euros per child during their six-month stay in the country. We are talking about those who did not receive the state reception system and live with relatives or acquaintances. This was announced last summer by the Minister of Integration, Social Security and Migration of Spain, José Luis Escriva. The newspaper specified that in total the funds allocated from European funds for these purposes amount to 52.8 million euros. The management of this process was delegated to the autonomous communities, which received 70% of this amount in October 2022. But even that money got stuck somewhere, not reaching the Ukrainian families, as the article says, “due to bureaucratic delays.”
The publication conducted its own survey and contacted each of the 17 autonomous communities of Spain. All but one who ignored the request (Canary Islands) responded. Eight of them confirmed that they had not issued a single euro to the beneficiaries. These are Asturias, Cantabria, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, Valencia, Galicia, Madrid and Murcia. Nothing could be confirmed in the autonomous region of Castile-Leon. Everyone had different explanations. Assistance was to be received by 40,000 of the nearly 170,000 Ukrainian refugees who had arrived in Spain since the beginning of the conflict.
