Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with the head of Eritrea, Isaias Afewerki, who is in Russia on an official visit.
As the Kremlin press service reported, during the meeting it is planned to discuss the prospects for the development of Russian-Eritrean relations in various fields, as well as topical issues on the regional and international agenda.
The upcoming talks will be the first meeting between the leaders of the two countries.
Eritrea is located in East Africa on the Red Sea. Diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation were established on May 24, 1993. In January 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation visited Eritrea Sergey Lavrov.
Afeverki received the Russian minister at his residence. According to Lavrov, the main topic of their conversation with the President of Eritrea was the radical change in the international situation. In addition, key areas for the further development of Russian-Eritrean relations “with an emphasis on promoting promising joint economic projects” were discussed. Following the results of his trip to this and other African countries, Lavrov reported to Putin at an operational meeting of the Security Council.
Eritrean Foreign Minister visited Moscow in April 2022 Osman Saleh Mohammed. In March 2022, Eritrea was one of the states that voted at the UN against a resolution condemning Russia in connection with the situation in Ukraine.
