Russia, in accordance with the UN Charter, had every right to recognize the independence of the Donbass republics, and then provide them with military assistance. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Against the backdrop of growing risks and threats for Russia, it was forced to launch a special operation to defend its security, Putin said. “This is the decision of a sovereign country, which has an unconditional right, based, by the way, on the UN Charter, to defend its security. A decision aimed at protecting our citizens, residents of the people’s republics of Donbass, who for eight years were subjected to genocide by the Kyiv regime and neo-Nazis who received the full protection of the West,” the head of state said.

Earlier, the president said that Russia would respect any choice of the residents of the liberated territories of Ukraine. Only they should decide their fate, he noted.

Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine on February 24 after an appeal by the heads of the DPR and LPR. Its goal is the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine.
