Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory telegram to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the occasion of Korea’s Independence Day and liberation from Japanese colonial rule. This was reported by the North Korean Central Telegraph Agency (KCNA).

In his address, the Russian leader expressed confidence in the growth of bilateral cooperation and said that both countries remember the heroism and courage of the soldiers of the Russian Federation and the DPRK in the struggle for the liberation of Korea. At the same time, Putin wished his colleague good health, and happiness and prosperity to the people of the country.

The Korean Peninsula was under Japanese occupation from 1910 to 1945. After the surrender, which took place on August 15, Tokyo renounced the annexed territories, and this day was considered a national holiday in both North and South Korea.
