The EU needs to focus on helping Ukraine, rather than arguing about granting it candidate status for EU membership. This was announced on June 14 by the Prime Minister of Portugal António Costa in an interview with the Financial Times.
According to him, the discussion of the status of a candidate for the EU creates in Ukraine “false expectations”which in the future will turn “bitter disappointment.”
He added that the status of an EU candidate is only the beginning of the country’s admission process, which can drag on for years and will not solve current problems. At the same time, disputes over the candidate’s status will only sow discord among EU members.
