U.S. grand jury has indicted several Iranian nationals in connection with the hacking of Donald Trump‘s 2024 presidential campaign headquarters Politico reports, citing three informed sources.
The indictment charges multiple Iranians for their involvement in cyberattack targeting Trump’s campaign although the names of defendants and specific charges they face have yet to be revealed.
Earlier, US intelligence agencies issued a joint statement alleging that Iranian hackers had stolen internal documents from Trump’s campaign during summer. Which were then leaked to media outlets and individuals connected to current President Joe Biden.
Previously, Trump publicly called on Biden to warn Iran of potential retaliation for what he described as “threats” against current and former U.S. presidents.
On Tuesday, Trump’s campaign claimed that U.S. intelligence had alerted them to growing threats from Iran specifically aimed at the former president. Trump, without providing evidence accused Iran of having already made unsuccessful attempts against him, and warned of potential future actions.
Despite these threats Trump expressed confidence stating that they do not intimidate him. He also noted that the U.S. military is closely monitoring the situation to see how it evolves.
Reports have surfaced suggesting that Washington suspects Tehran of trying to influence outcome of upcoming US elections.
