The second line of the Main Sewer Collector (GKK) from the Northern Aeration Station to the Kantemirovskiy Bridge is to be built in three stages by 2030. It will become an understudy of the historical section of the GKK, launched back in 1986. For the first stage of construction, 6.6 billion rubles are allocated from the funds of the Housing and Public Utilities Reform Assistance Fund, and 3 billion rubles from the city budget.

On August 11, the work of the drilling rig was launched, which marked the beginning of the project. As the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov told Sergey Stepashin, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Territorial Development Fund, who arrived at the site, according to rough estimates, the implementation of the second and third stages of the construction of the GKK thread will require 15 billion rubles each.

The GKK with a length of more than 24 kilometers ensures the vital activity and environmental safety of the population of six districts of the northern part of St. Petersburg. Through the collector, wastewater from residential buildings, industrial enterprises and rainwater enters the treatment plant.

The State Unitary Enterprise “Vodokanal” recalled that until 1978, all wastewater in St. Petersburg was discharged into the Neva without treatment. Every day it was about 3.5 million cubic meters of wastewater.

In 1978, the first stage of the central aeration station was launched on Bely Island. After the launch of the second stage, as well as the commissioning of the Northern Aeration Station and the South-Western Treatment Plant, the level of wastewater treatment in the metropolis reached 85 percent.

But even then the need to build a sewer collector was clear. It was built from the village of Olgino in the north of the city to the Kantemirovskiy bridge in 1986. But due to the high cost, the construction was carried out in one thread without duplication and loopbacks. In this state, this section of the collector has been in operation for more than 30 years.

The construction of the continuation of the GKK from Kantemirovskiy Bridge to the sewage pumping station on Zolnaya Street in the southeast of the city was frozen in the 1990s. Resumed work after 2004 by decision of Valentina Matvienko, who was then the governor of St. Petersburg. The continuation was built in two strands at once, the work was completed in 2013, the project cost about 28 billion rubles.

Now the city authorities are returning to the construction of a backup line for the old section of the GKK.

At the first stage, a section 2.9 kilometers long will be laid, the implementation period is 2024. At the second stage, it is planned to mount 3.7 kilometers, at the third – 5.6 kilometers.

Sergei Stepashin said that it is possible to allocate additional funding from the Fund if other regions do not use their limits on projects, as the St. Petersburg builders assured that, with a favorable financing regime, they can complete construction by 2028.
