Peskov: dialogue with the Taliban will help to better understand what is happening in Afghanistan

The talks with the Taliban (the terrorist movement Taliban, banned in Russia) are aimed at better understanding what is happening in Afghanistan. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the meeting of the “Moscow format”, which is taking place today, October 20, in Moscow. In addition to the Taliban delegation, representatives from ten countries in the region are participating in the consultations. The United States refused to participate in these negotiations due to logistics difficulties.

“The situation in Afghanistan is extremely important for us, for the space and territory that unites us and our allies in various associations. Therefore, de facto, this communication really takes place. You know, the Moscow format is underway in Moscow today, and direct contacts are precisely aimed at better understanding what is happening in this state, what are the intentions of the Taliban, what is their main line, what are their plans for the medium and long term ” , – said Mr. Peskov during the press-call.

The Kremlin spokesman recalled that de jure the Taliban are not recognized by Russia and other world states, but de facto the Taliban are the leadership of the country of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has been under Taliban control since 15 August. After former President Ashraf Ghani resigned and left the country, the Taliban formed an interim government in the country. The military resistance of the Afghan National Resistance Front, which consists of former members of the Northern Alliance and other opponents of the Taliban, remains uncontrollable.
