Kremlin spokesman Peskov: situation with arms control in the world is sad
The current situation in the world with regard to arms control and stability remains sad. The United States is to blame for this. This statement was made by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, wrote Interfax.
“In general, the topic of arms control and stability is an extremely important topic not only for Russia and the United States, but for the whole world, and now we can only state with regret that there are no serious substantive contacts on these issues between Moscow and Washington,” he said.
So Peskov commented on the bill submitted for consideration by the US Congress on the withdrawal of the States from the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) and the strengthening of nuclear forces. The Kremlin spokesman noted that “the last remnants of the international legal framework in this area” are slipping from under their feet. According to him, time is shrinking like shagreen leather.
“Therefore, the situation here is sad, and the responsibility for this sad situation lies entirely with Washington,” he concluded.
Earlier, the author of the draft law, Tom Cotton, said that US President Joe Biden did not need to renew the START Treaty. In his opinion, the extension of the agreement only weakened the States, and made China and Russia stronger.
