Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation in Vienna: the UN Secretariat could not clearly explain the blocking of the IAEA visit

The Security Department of the UN Secretariat was unable to clearly explain the reason for blocking the trip of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the Zaporozhye NPP, Mikhail Ulyanov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to International Organizations in Vienna, said. The visit was discussed in May-June.

“The role of the UN in this case is that the Department of Security of the UN Secretariat must give the green light for a trip to a troubled area. Everything else is the prerogative of the IAEA, its area of responsibility. We worked very closely with the agency in May-June and prepared the visit. At the last moment, the UN Secretariat blocked it without a clear explanation of the reasons,” Mr. Ulyanov said. TASS.

In early June, Russia and the IAEA agreed on a visit to the ZNPP, which is under the control of the Russian military. The mission was to be headed by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the visit was disrupted by the UN Secretariat. Ukraine said earlier this week that a condition for the IAEA visit was the withdrawal of Russian troops.
