Perm scientists will simplify oil production in the Russian Federation due to a new method

Perm scientists have created a virtual laboratory for the study of oil wells

Scientists from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have found a new way to explore oil reserves. They have developed a virtual laboratory for rock analysis that reduces the time and cost of studying wells. A computer program invented by scientists allows you to create digital copies of core samples. These are columns of rock extracted from a well. By studying them, geologists evaluate the reserves and efficiency of oil production.

“These are quite unique samples, they are not taken from every well, but only from some, so core samples are used for all gold. We can study the property of a well from one sample only once, for example, by influencing it with water. After that, the core becomes unusable. But we need to constantly study the properties, the process of oil movement along the reservoir. For this, our virtual laboratory of digital core samples was created, ”Dmitry Martyushev, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Oil and Gas Technologies at PNRPU, told URA.RU.

Computed tomography is used to create digital copies of samples. As a result, 3D models of each core column are obtained. Numerous operations can be performed with virtual twins of samples, such as simulating the effects of acids and other liquids. At the same time, the result of the experiment will be ready in 4-5 hours, while the study of a natural core takes several days. Based on the results of a particular operation, conclusions are drawn about the reserves of the well, the quality of oil, as well as more efficient methods of its production.

“We can also project various situations onto digital copies of the samples, for example, simulate in a virtual laboratory a core sample with a fracture created during hydraulic fracturing. This is a method of oil production in which water is pumped into the well. We create such a fracture, then we look in which direction the formation is moving, after which we understand whether hydraulic fracturing will be effective in this well. That is, we can simulate any conditions on any digital copy and understand how it is more profitable and better to develop a field and a specific well,” explained Dmitry Martyushev, associate professor at PNRPU.

The database of the digital laboratory already contains about 40 thoroughly studied core samples from the northern deposits of the Perm Territory. Over time, the database will be updated with data from other regions of Russia. The work on the project was carried out by a group of specialists from PNRPU together with colleagues from China. The process of obtaining a patent is currently underway. According to scientists, this laboratory can be used at the facilities of the oil and gas industry, including LUKOIL and Gazprom. Also, the Permian invention can be useful to historians and archaeologists.

The development was carried out as part of the Priority 2030 academic strategic leadership program, under which the Perm Polytechnic University received a grant of 100 million rubles. Priority 2030 is the largest program of state support and development of higher education institutions in the history of Russia. The goal is to form more than 100 progressive modern universities in the country, which will become centers of scientific, technological and socio-economic development of the country. In total, the commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation included 106 universities from 49 cities of the country in the program. 60% of them are regional universities.

The creation and maintenance of a powerful scientific and technical base is an important condition for ensuring the sovereignty of the country, its development and economic well-being.
