The United States is pleased that talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan are continuing, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement released on the evening of May 30.

The document states that the leaders of the two Transcaucasian republics will meet with European partners in the capital of Moldova next Thursday.

“As stated by the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, peace in the South Caucasus is achievable. The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet with our European partners in Chisinau. We hope that this will be a productive step towards resolving issues at the negotiating table,” the statement says.

At the same time, the US Foreign Ministry stressed that “aggressive rhetoric can only preserve the violence of the past,” and “constructive dialogue can initiate peace, opportunity and hope.”

“The United States is ready to support the efforts of both sides to achieve a lasting and worthy peace agreement in the region,” official Washington assured.

The day before, Brussels indicated that the European Union is preparing a “big meeting” between the President of Azerbaijan Ilham AliyevPrime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyanthe leaders of France and Germany – Emmanuel Macron And Olaf Scholzas well as the President of the Council of the EU Charles Michel on the sidelines of the second summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in Chisinau.

Prior to this, Charles Michel expressed hope that the discussions on the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan would continue on the sidelines of the ENP summit that opens next Thursday, calling on Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev to make “bold decisions”.

Before the five-sided meeting in Chisinau in the Western media with reference to the Azerbaijani Ambassador to France Leyla Abdullayeva there were suggestions that on June 1 Baku and Yerevan would be able to reach an agreement on peace and the establishment of interstate relations. However, the Armenian Foreign Ministry indicated that the signing of a peace treaty in the Moldovan capital is not planned.
