Pancreatitis is seriously “younger”, began to occur even in children

Pancreatitis was previously considered a disease of the elderly, but recently it has become much “younger” and began to occur in a chronic form even in children. About this publication “Vesti Podmoskovye” said the head of the medical department of the KDL network Olga Malinovskaya.

“If a few years ago pancreatitis was considered a disease of the elderly, today the disease is seriously “younger”. The average age of the first manifestation of the disease has decreased from 55–60 years to 40, in addition, cases of chronic pancreatitis in children today are not at all uncommon”, — she said.

Malinovskaya clarified that with pancreatitis, pain occurs in the upper abdomen, which can often go to the back and, as it were, encircle a person. She added that pain occurs in nine out of ten cases of pancreatitis, and in its absence, there is bloating, increased gas production, nausea, constipation, loss of appetite and weight loss.

According to the doctor, it is possible to “earn” the disease due to excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking. In addition, obesity, diabetes, and very often heredity contribute to this. So, with the number of overweight people, the number of people suffering from pancreatitis is also growing. Experts attribute this to an unbalanced diet and a sedentary lifestyle.

The specialist clarified that the diagnosis of both chronic and acute pancreatitis is possible only by passing tests. The indicator is the determination of the concentration of pancreatic enzymes in the body – lipases and amylases.
