New Polish US Surcharge for Protection from Russia Revealed

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the head of the Polish Ministry of National Defense Mariusz Blaszczak have signed a new agreement between the governments of the countries, which implies strengthening military cooperation, Defense24 reports.

The ceremony took place at the presidential palace in Warsaw in the presence of Polish President Andrzej Duda.

The purpose of the agreement is called “strengthening Polish security” (earlier in Poland they repeatedly stated the need for protection from Russia). The amount of additional payments for the implementation of this agreement from the Polish budget is estimated at 500 million zlotys (about 135 million dollars) per year.

“It is worth recalling that the presence of American troops in Poland, in addition to the security benefits, also brings economic benefits in the form of investment in construction, job creation or spending on the local market by American soldiers,” writes Defense24.

The publication notes that the deployment of 14 thousand American troops in Germany annually brings the local economy about $ 5 billion. Defense24 assures that Warsaw will spend much less money on the American contingent than Japan or South Korea, which contain an order of magnitude more American troops.
The signed agreement assumes that at least one thousand American servicemen will be additionally sent to Poland, as well as the creation of a forward command center of the 5th US Army Corps in the country. According to Defense24, the treaty establishes a “longer-term” US military presence in Poland, where, according to various estimates, about 4,500 American troops are currently stationed.

In August, Defense24 wrote that “Russians with systems installed in or near Crimea can already attack half of Europe (including almost all of Poland), the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa and the Persian Gulf region.”

In June, the Financial Times wrote that the United States had almost reached an agreement with Poland on the deployment of an additional contingent of troops, as a result of which the total number of American units in this country could reach 5.5 thousand people.
