new fraudulent scheme — EADaily, August 12, 2022 — Economy news, Russian News

A new variant of fraud is gaining popularity in Russia: attackers disguised as sellers on Internet sites ask them to make purchases with a refund for a small premium, allegedly to raise their rating. Having exposed such a scheme, Stanislav Kuznetsov, deputy chairman of the board of Sberbank, explained that at first people get their money back and make new, more expensive purchases, but with a large amount of spending, scammers stop returning funds.

“The situation has become quite widespread when a telephone scammer persuades a client to help him raise his rating when selling goods,” bank spokesman said.

According to the legend, the seller wants to increase his rating on the e-commerce site with the help of a large number of sales, so he asks the person to buy his goods, and then promises to return the money.

“Many buy into this, because the scammer returns a little more – plus 4-5%. A person sees that by helping such a seller, he even earns a little. At some point, he is involved in buying more expensive items, but at some point it stops like a house of cards, and the client suffers a big loss. This scheme is now gaining momentum and becoming more popular in our country,” Kuznetsov summed up.

At the same time, the deputy chairman of the board of Sberbank emphasized that schemes involving law enforcement officers, a scheme with supposedly issuing a loan in the name of the victim, as well as scenarios related to various sales are still the most popular among fraudsters.
