NEP: TET, B.Ed. Courses and Teachers Recruitment Process changes, know what else is in education policy for teachers

The new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, released by the Center, has recommended a comprehensive change in the country’s education system. According to the new policy, by 2030, the minimum degree required for teaching will be a four-year integrated B.Ed. In addition, the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) will also be changed as per the new school system. Earlier, TET was divided into two parts – Part 1 and Part 2. Now the school structure is divided into four parts – Basic, Elementary, Middle and Secondary.

Now TET will be developed accordingly. For subject teachers, test scores in appropriate TET or National Testing Agency (NTA) related subjects will also be taken into consideration for recruitment. The NTA will conduct the examination for all subjects and a general aptitude test.

TET qualifiers will have to give a demo or appear in an interview, and according to the new policy, show their knowledge of the local language. According to NEP, “interviews will become an integral part of teacher recruitment”. These interviews will assess comfort and proficiency in local language teaching. Teet compulsorily must be passed for teachers of private schools.

Recruitment and vacant positions in schools will be digitally managed. A technology-based comprehensive teacher-needs planning forecasting exercise will be conducted by each state to assess the vacant positions required subject-wise over the next two decades.

Dual B.Ed. degrees will also be awarded with a focus on one language and bilingual lectures. The B.Ed. program will allow specialization in the education of “gifted children”.

Options for one and two year B.Ed. will also be available. The two-year B.Ed. will be for candidates holding a bachelor’s degree, and the one-year B.Ed. programs will be offered only to those who have or have obtained a master’s degree equal to a four-year multi-subject bachelor’s degree. These candidates will later be hired as subject teachers (or pursuing subjects at UG or PG level) in the specialty area.

Teachers who have already been hired will be expected to participate in at least 50 hours of continuous professional development (CPD) every year. A merit-based structure of tenure, promotion, and salary structure will be developed. Under this model, teachers will be encouraged.

The system of evaluation will include several parameters. These criteria will be developed by each state and include peer review, attendance, commitment, CPD hours and other types of service to the school and community.
