Nebenzya: the responsibility in the event of a catastrophe at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant will fall on the West

Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya considers the accusations against Russia of shelling the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant “absurd”. He stated that if a catastrophe occurs at the station, then “Western sponsors of Kyiv” will be responsible. The diplomat expects experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to arrive at the nuclear power plant in August.

Mr. Nebenzya spoke at a meeting of the Security Council of the world organization dedicated to the situation around the ZNPP. The permanent representative of the Russian Federation claims that the Ukrainian military was involved in the attacks on the station. According to him, “Kyiv’s criminal attacks on nuclear infrastructure facilities are pushing the world to the brink of a nuclear catastrophe comparable in scale to Chernobyl.”

“If the UAF attacks continue, she (catastrophe.— “b”) can happen at any time. Then the territories of Kyiv, Zaporizhia, Kharkov, Poltava, Kherson, Odessa, Nikolaev, Kirovograd, Vinnitsa regions, the DPR and LPR, the border regions of Russia and Belarus, as well as Moldova, Bulgaria and Romania will be under the threat of radioactive contamination … All responsibility for this in this case will fall on the Western sponsors of Kyiv, ”he said (quoted from TASS).

Vasily Nebenzia expressed hope that the UN would not interfere with the visit of the IAEA representatives to the Zaporozhye NPP. He assured that Russia “is ready to provide the maximum possible assistance in resolving all organizational issues.” “We consider it justified that IAEA representatives arrive at the ZNPP as soon as possible, perhaps even before the end of August,” the permanent representative added.

Only yesterday, on August 11, the territory adjacent to the Zaporozhye NPP was fired upon three times. The pro-Russian authorities of Energodar (Zaporozhye region) accuse Ukraine of shelling. Kyiv claims that the Russian military themselves are shelling a power plant they control. On August 6, one of the three power units was switched off at the Zaporozhye NPP. The UN believes that Ukraine and Russia are independently capable of creating a security perimeter around the station. The IAEA does not yet see an “immediate threat” to the nuclear safety of nuclear power plants.
