NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has sparked excitement with a groundbreaking discovery: chemical traces of gases in an exoplanet’s atmosphere hinting at possible life beyond Earth.

Detected on K2-18b a planet outside our solar system these gases—dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide—are typically produced by biological processes such as marine phytoplankton on Earth. This marks one of strongest signs yet of potential extraterrestrial life.

Scientists emphasize this isn’t definitive proof of life but a significant clue. K2-18b potentially habitable exoplanet shows “Hycean” environment—possibly an ocean world teeming with microbial life.
Earlier observations also identified methane and carbon dioxide in its atmosphere, further supporting its potential to host life. Researchers call for more studies to confirm these findings.
“This discovery ushers in an era of observational astrobiology,” said lead researcher Madhusudan. “We can now detect biological signatures on distant worlds using current technology.”

Human fascination with alien life dates back to Galileo’s 17th-century telescope, which fueled questions about extraterrestrial existence. Over centuries these mysteries inspired literature, films, and web series.
While debates persist, some point to ancient texts, like the Quran, which mentions “dabba” (creatures) in cosmos suggesting life beyond Earth in Surahs like Al-Talaq and Ash-Shura.
NASA’s efforts to find life extend to Mars, Venus, and icy moons in our solar system. Last year, Mexico’s Congress displayed alleged “non-human” fossils reigniting global debate.
Despite investing nearly billion NASA’s 16-member research team led by Bill Nelson says conclusive evidence remains elusive. Nelson personally believes alien life exists but stresses need for further exploration.
