With no working refineries, Morocco began exporting diesel fuel to Spain. The country successfully buys Russian oil products at discount prices.
“At the end of 2022, Morocco began to buy diesel fuel from Moscow, an average of more than 7 million liters per day. In parallel, Rabat began to export it to Spain,” writes El Mundo. The publication points out that 8 years ago the only refinery in the country stopped and the current situation alerted the authorities and energy representatives.
In January, Morocco began exporting oil products to Spain, Turkey, Ghana and southern Africa, and monitoring of ships indicates that Spain covers 10% of the demand for diesel fuel from Morocco every month, writes El Mundo. Deliveries are estimated at $ 60 million.
The publication points out that Spain’s African neighbor imports 50,000-100,000 barrels of oil products per day from Russia, and the new supplier has replaced traditional ones, such as Saudi Arabia.
According to the navigation portal Vesselfinder, on April 28, at least three tankers are heading from the Baltic ports to Morocco. They can carry 170,000 tons of oil products on board.
On December 5, the EU banned fuel imports from Russia, and Russian producers diverted flows to new markets, offering discounts to consumers.
