Moment of madness that almost ended World Cup hopes

DOHA: While Graham Arnold repeatedly stated there’d be no concentrate on the sport between Tunisia and France as Australia took on Denmark, that wasn’t fairly the case.

“It was just a quiet word from Tony Vidmar in my ear, no more than information, nothing to jump at or panic,” assistant coach Rene Meulensteen stated, of the information that Tunisia had the lead in opposition to France.

If that end result held, a draw could be no good for the Socceroos.

But earlier than phrase might get to the top coach, Mat Leckie had given the Socceroos a 1-0 lead over Denmark.

“The funny thing was, straight after, we scored – that’s when I told Arnie,” Meulensteen added.

“Then I grabbed Milos Degenek and said, ‘Get in a huddle, and tell the players to make sure that we know where we are. (France is) winning 1-0, we have to win, we have to keep a clean sheet and keep concentration and focus up’.”

But Degenek confessed that at first, the opposite gamers did not consider him.

“The boys thought it was me psyching them up so we don’t lose, but I was actually being serious,” he informed reporters afterwards.

But whether or not they knew or not, they defended brilliantly, and obtained Meulensteen that valuable clear sheet.

Star’s passionate A-League plea

Melbourne City striker Jamie Maclaren launched an impassioned plea for the state of the A-League, referencing the glorious celebrations back home as proof of the nation’s love for soccer.

“It just shows, there is people in our country that love this f–king game,” he told reporters after Australia’s win over Denmark.

“Just come and support us.”

Maclaren has been a standout performer within the home league since coming back from Europe in 2019.

“While we sit on the backburner with a lot of codes in our country – to sit here now after doing what only one Socceroos team has done before, it’s massive.”

“It’s massive for us back home,” Keanu Baccus added.

”People probably wrote us off, but the majority of us have come through the league … and the league’s quality, you know?”

Leckie and Ryan be a part of rarified air

Both Mat Ryan and Mat Leckie are of their third World Cup and at present joined two of the Socceroos all-time greats with essentially the most World Cup appearances of all time.

Both Mark Bresciano and Tim Cahill have 9 apiece, with Leckie and Ryan becoming a member of them at present.

Barring damage or the event being known as off, the pair will break that mark on Sunday morning after they every play at a World Cup for the tenth time.
