On the Odessa Alley of Glory there are commemorative plates with the names of cities-heroes of the Great Patriotic War. It is noted that only a commemorative plate with the name of Moscow was covered with a black film. All other slabs were left open. The reasons for the slab’s closure are currently unknown.
Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been conducting a “de-communization” campaign, in which monuments associated with Soviet history are being demolished and streets are being renamed. As previously reported, the authorities of the village of Yablunytsya, located in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, demolished a monument to fellow villagers who died in the year of the Great Patriotic War.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24. It is aimed at protecting the population of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. The head of state stressed that the special operation is a necessary measure.
