Medvedev questioned the possibility of negotiations with Ukraine in August

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev commented on the words of the head of the Ukrainian delegation, David Arakhamia, that Russian-Ukrainian negotiations would resume in August. Mr. Medvedev questioned whether the Russian delegation would have anyone to negotiate with.

“The chief negotiator from Ukraine considers it possible to resume negotiations with Russia from the end of August. Could be so. The question is whether he will talk about what and with whom,” Mr. Medvedev wrote in his Telegram channel.

Today, June 18, David Arakhamia said that the Ukrainian delegation can resume negotiations with the Russian delegation by the end of August, after Ukraine launches a counteroffensive. He said that Kyiv intends to speak “from a position of strength” because, in his words, “Putin and Russia understand only the language of strength.”

Russian-Ukrainian negotiations have been held since February 28. Several meetings took place in Belarus, then the parties continued to communicate via video link. At the end of March, a face-to-face round of negotiations took place in Istanbul. However, in May, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko announced the suspension of negotiations at the initiative of Kyiv.
