The suspect in the attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump has a previous criminal record, having been held criminally liable on two occasions, the Ministry of Justice has announced. The FBI is currently investigating his claims of intending to recruit mercenaries in Ukraine.
“In 2002, he committed a crime in North Carolina, and again in March 2010, which means he did not have the right to own a firearm,” a prosecutor’s office representative said during a special briefing, broadcast by American television channels.
An FBI representative, in turn, stated at the briefing that agents are examining the suspect’s social media posts. “Additionally, we are verifying media reports and his statements about intending to recruit Afghan soldiers and others for combat in Ukraine,” the Bureau representative said.
Meanwhile, a Secret Service representative reported that the highest level of security control is being maintained at Trump’s residence, with roadblocks set to remain in place on Monday and Tuesday for the investigation.
The second attempt on Trump’s life occurred on September 15 near his golf club in Florida. According to law enforcement officials, Secret Service agents opened fire on the perpetrator, who was hiding in the bushes.
The man fled and attempted to escape in a car but was apprehended. An AK-47 rifle with an optical sight, two backpacks, and a GoPro action camera were found at the scene where he was spotted. The FBI has joined the investigation.
During a pre-election rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, Trump was injured in the ear, one spectator was killed, and two others were injured. The suspect, armed with an assault rifle, was hiding on the roof of a production building 100 meters from the stage and was eliminated by a Secret Service sniper.
Trump has claimed that the attempted assassinations on his life were allegedly inspired by the “rhetoric” of his election rival, Democrat Kamala Harris, and President Joe Biden.
The US presidential election is scheduled to take place on November 5, with Harris representing the Democratic Party and Trump representing the Republican Party.
