Marcus Rashford (50th, 68th) and Phil Foden (51st) scored as England beat Wales 3–0 in their Group B match at the FIFA World Cup. England, the 1966 champions, have reached the knockouts for the second time in a row. England and Wales could not score any goals in the first half. The situation changed in the second half. England changed the picture of the match by scoring two goals in two minutes.

In the 50th minute, Rashford made an excellent kick over the wall of defenders on a free kick, on which the ball waved and landed in the goal post. The goalkeeper could not save the goal even after diving. Foden then made it 2-0 with a powerful shot on a pass from Harry Kane in the box. Trailing by two goals, Wales’ defense began to crumble. Rashford once again took advantage of this when he scored his second and team’s third goal in this match.

The Manchester United player capitalized on the opportunity on a pass by Kelvin Phillips. It was also England’s 100th goal in World Cup finals. Dane James scored a try for Wales in the 56th minute. Kiefer Moore also tried but could not score. Wales fought hard in the first half but after the substitution of Gareth Bale in the second half, Wales weakened while England became more attacking.

England’s team could be out of the last-16 race in the same situation if Wales beat them by a margin of four goals, but here England unilaterally washed Wales. Wales, playing in the World Cup for the first time since 1958, were eliminated in the group stage.

  • Harry Kane became the first England player to assist in three goals in a single World Cup. Earlier this was done by David Beckham in 2002.
  • This was the 7th encounter between England and Wales, with England winning their sixth. One match was a draw.
