Senior Congress leader Manish Tewari on Monday took a jibe at his own party government in the state in the backdrop of the Centre’s decision to increase the Border Security Force’s (BSF) jurisdiction to 50 kms in Punjab and questioned whether the Center has so far Why was the notification not challenged in the Supreme Court? Lok Sabha MP Tiwari also asked whether opposing the notification of the Center is just a sham.
It has been almost a month since the Centre’s notification regarding the jurisdiction of BSF in Punjab within 50 km radius, he tweeted. Why was this notification not challenged by the Punjab government in the Supreme Court under Article 131? Is the protest just a sham?

Significantly, the Center has empowered the BSF to conduct searches, arrest suspects and make seizures in the area within 50 km of the International Border. Earlier this jurisdiction was up to 15 km.
Earlier, former State Congress President Sunil Jakhar has also targeted the Congress government of Punjab. Attacking the Channi government for expanding the BSF, Jakhar had said that Chief Minister Channi, during his meeting with the Union Home Minister on October 5, had requested for sealing of the Indo-Pak border in Punjab.
Addressing Chief Minister Channi, Jakhar had tweeted, ‘Be careful what you have asked! Has Charanjit Channi inadvertently handed over half of Punjab to the central government? 25000 sq km (out of total 50,000 sq km) is now placed under the jurisdiction of BSF. Punjab Police is shocked. Do we still want more autonomy for the states?’
